First plowable snow in central PA

Well we just had our first plowable snow in central pa. We got about 6 or7 inches. I finally had a chance to use my sportsman 800 I purchase this past summer to plow my driveway, which is about a quart mile long. I must say the polaris worked flawlessly. This thing plows ten times better than my old Suzuki King Quad did. Can't wait for the next storm, I had alot of fun playing around too.

We finally got snow in these parts too. About 2' in the valley over the course of three days.

I've been able to use my new 800 for plowing and what a difference from my older 400.

I decided to go with the 60" Polaris Glacier III plow. I'm NOT impressed with the wear bar AT ALL. I plow about 300' of driveway and a large parking area in front of two garages, all blacktop. Three (3) times and the bar was worn to the blade. Just glad I had the shoes set.

However....... I fixed that problem by making a trip to Alro Steel. I had them cut me a 60" piece of 1/2" x 4" wide stock. Brought it home, took the "new" bar off and marked the holes. I mark them in the center, which when one side wears, just unbolt it and turn it over. It also adds siginificent weight for down pressure.

Nice thing about Alro or any other steel company, you can get anything you want, they're much cheaper and you can get much better steel for a lot less cost. My stock cost me $39. I just drilled nine holes...

I plowed with my 2012 Sportman 550 for the first time yesterday as well. I was really impressed. A friend of mine warned me about the wear bar. He wants me to get the metal and weld it on the old metal but I would prefer doing it the way you did it so it will be easier to replace. I was going to go with 1/4 inch but I'm liking your thinking with the 1/2 inch having more weight. I may try to get 1/2 inch.

I thought for sure, that I'd get at least most of the year with the supplied bar. I'm actually shocked that it wore that quickly.

On the 400, I've had the 1/2" thick steel on there for a few years. Other than the angle being worn on it, you'd have to get right down close and measure it to determine how much has worn.

1/2" x 4" x 60"........... $39.00 I just drilled the nine holes. Can't beat it. ALSO...... Alro Steel can order (up here) can order a much harder steel that they didn't have in stock, that barely wears what so ever. I'd have had to order it and wait a week or so. Couldn't afford the wait with the current bar worn to the blade.

Yea I am in the same situation. I plowed 6 driveways and a church. All blacktop and I felt the bottom of my plow and I have about 1/8" left on my wear blade. I'm going to jump right on that 1/2" wear blade this week. Hopefully I can score on one as cheap as you did. I am thinking about getting a 3" wide instead of 4". That would leave me 2" below the blade for wear. I don't want too much more hanging down because I noticed going down some banks I was hitting the surface coming down.

Going to a place like Alro Steel or any steel company, eliminates ALL of the middlemen, saving a ton of money. I've been buying steel there for any use that I may have. I'm not certain that they sell a 3" piece but, you can always drill the holes to suit your plowing needs and still be able to turn it over. When drilling the holes in the center of the stock, you won't have more than 2" below the blade with 4" stock.

Encore, I called my place for metal today. I asked them if they had metal that was harder or something meant for snow plows. They told me that they didn't have anything with a "plow edge" on it and that the only steel they have is just what they called the soft steel. I assume if I got a piece of that in 1/2" thick that it would last me awhile. They quoted me a price of about $23 for a piece 3" x 60" and $2 per hole if I had them punch the holes. I figure that is a good price if it is the right metal for the job. By having a 3" piece I should have 2" below my actual plow and if that gets me by for 2 to 3 years I would be happy. I only have about an 1/8" left right now. I also don't know what they mean by "plow edge". Any input would be appreciated. I may be going tomorrow to get it cut.
