94 400L 4x4 speedo drive on the output shaft question

I just had the guy that sold me the atv give me the square stock for the speedo drive for down at the transmission. from what i can gather from Pictures of the unit, it looks like ill have to remove the Drive cover, and insert the drive key into the output shaft, replace cover and the thing should work. Am i on the correct thinking? or is there something i am missing. Someone must have had this apart at some time.

if its like my 97, speedo drive is out of tranny, have to remove skid platye to get to it

ya,, i saw that as well on a picture of a 94 w/ the skid plate off. Was just wondering if after the speedo cover is removed, i can just place the square stock, (or drive key) through the seal hole into the output shaft, put the speedo drive back on and it should work? I'm just looking to do this once , so was looking for someone that has had one apart. thanks
