bad rear u joints on a polaris sportsman

I purchased a 2005 sportsman 800 about two weeks ago. The man i got it from had it fully serviced but the dealership recommended that he got new wheel bearings and U joints. I called the dealership and with parts and labor it will cost almost $ 800. How can I tell if I actually need to get this fixed? Please HELP

jack it up, get all4 off the ground and star trocking tires back and forth, looking for slack in u-joint, probably rear drive line, pull on top and bottm of tires and see if there is slack, 800 is pretty steep, you can buy the u-joints and bearings from auto parts store, u-joints are napa#338, rear wheel bearings are federal-mogul#510013 front are federal mogul #510014
