Clutching Issue??

I have a 2003 Sportsman 500 and I don't know if this problem is because of my clutch, read on... When I put it in grae (high, low and reverse) the quad starts to move like I'm gently pushing the gas. When in gear I have to shut the machine down to get it out of gear and it sometimes grinds when you try to slowly put it in gear. Would this be a clutch is so primary, secondary... which one if either. When the machine is off it shifts in and out fine. Thanks for the input

not an expert in anyway but is the RPM set to high? Trying turning your idle down by the small knurled knob on the carb.

will try it but I think the idle is fine, thanks for the input. Any other ideas or info are still welcome.

Sounds like its the clutch to me. Lots of posts here about creeping in gear, and lots of different causes of its occurance. Without further info, it's hard to tell where yours is coming from but creeping is frequently a belt or primary issue (buttons, weights, rarely but sometimes spring). Have you taken the clutch cover off to have a look? That would be my first step. Let us know what you find in there and maybe we can help you straighten this out.

I just got finished with my creeping issue on my 2001..... Quite a few things to check. Go to the thread in "Repair and Maintenance" and read through , "Clutch belt issue". Feel free to ask any more questions...
PS ... this problem is quite common and the first thing Polaris asked me was how's my lower engine mount. If it's worn , it puts the belt out of alignment. Is your clutch EBS?

Kevin
