04 awd NOT working, speedo does!!!

just picked up an 04 (carb) sportsman 700. awd does not work. speedo does, big handle bar guage lights up and showshours/miles/rmp. is there an awd light that is soposed to light up when locked in? also tryed in reverse/hi/low, and with override button in. never works. is there a fuse or sensor? help me guys, and thanks in advance!!!

On my 2010 there is a little light on the cluster, not sure of your year. It is an electroniclly controled magnet the engages the awd, if its the same i would check the wire for cracks or the plug. On mine the speedo has nothing to do with the awd, it is attached to the brake on the right caliper. For your sake I hope its electrical, if not my next guess would be the roller cage inside the diff. Again not sure of your year but i know polaris used alot of plastic cages, they are pretty much junk. But in about two hours and four hundred dollars you can pull your diff out and rebuild it with a billet aluminum roller cage and new seals. Good luck in finding your prob.

My 2004 Sportsman 500HO has an indicator in the gauge pod that shows when AWD in "on". Left edge about half way up.

thanks guys, finally i see the indicator light. turns out the awd switch on the handle bars doesnt work if you push it the whole way to the left (awd). if you bring it back a little it works great, before i take that apart, is there a way of cleaning any connecting inside of it?
