Fuel Tank Foam Seal ????

Hi all!
After pulling the fuel tank from my 2003 Sportsman 700, I examined the Parts Manual and notice that I was missing the foam seal (PN 5812265). I picked one up and now I can't figure out where it goes! Anyone know where it is placed on the tank or what the purpose might be?
Thanks!

Working on Sunday. No rest for the weary! Did you have a chance to think about it?

ahh sorry. yeah, i am a college student so i have school like 9-4 mon-friday and then i work 9-4 on sat. and sun. i consider sleeping in to be 8am, and i do that 7 days a week. haha, gotta love being broke.

okay, so here is your OEM microfiche. #3 is the foam seal you mentioned. it appears it fits like it is show on the back of the fuel tank. i dont have a mental picture exactly of your set-up though. does it look like it would fit there correctly?

if i remember right, your breather for your air box should be close by, and my assumption is that this foam seal is there to help keep the airbox form sucking in dirt and dust, and also to reduce rattle from the body plastics.

let me know if this helps you at all, and if not ill try to do some more research.

Broke student, huh? I remember those days. I worked at a Massey Ferguson dealer and always smelled like diesel when on a date. Good luck! The thing is that the piece doesn't really look like the one in the fiche! It is rectangular, about 10" by 2" with a "v" notch in the middle. I am thinking that it might go across the top of the tank toward the front with the notch at the steering post. this might prevent wear and rattles between the tank and front cab. Bit of mystery to me.

The link points to a 2004 model and the tank is quite a bit different. Mine looks like the one in the fiche above. But, maybe there's a clue in here...I'll have to put mu thinking cap back on.
