2012 sportsman 400 hard start

Hey guys my 2012 sportsman 400 HO has a tough time starting after I haven't ridden it in a few days and chocking it doesn't help I have to give it a little gas while starting it and I don't like doing that cause it catches the starter sometimes and grinds and I just had it serviced and they didn't say anything about it but after paying $235 to get the oil changed and spark plug changed I decided I would never have them do it again cause I'm a do it my self kind of guy so of anyone has any idea what to try I would appreciate it

Adjust the throttle cable a turn or 2 and check your rpm's at idle. I have 2012 500 and had the same issue. It would not start or idle without giving it gas. I think the throttle cable on these bikes stretch after the first couple of rides. I also increased the idle on my carb also.

What is your starting procedure? These carbs don't have a traditional "choke" as most are familiar with. They actually have an "enrichener" that dumps raw fuel into the carb throat when the valve at the end of the cable is opened. When using the choke, don't open the throttle and just crank normally. You may or may not need full choke, but it's always worked for me and once started you can usually push the choke back in. - MarkC

I always hold the throttle about a 1/4 of the way down when i bump mine over. Starts right up; I have done this since new. 2012 500.
