Clutch Problem

hey I have a 1998 sportsman 500 and my belt is always ridding on the inside of the primary clutch witch is making it creep away and can't shift out of gear with out shutting the bike off. Help me please.I have tried moving the engine, putting a shim behind secondary clutch and even tried an old belt all to get the same exact results.

Idle set to high??? Have you removed the cover and looked at the clutch while it's running? Can you take some pic's or a video?? Does the belt ride high in the driven clutch(rear) Is the drive clutch (front) retracted at idle? (The sliding part of the clutch up against the center bolt)

'96 Xplorer 300 Aftermarket CDI box, K&N filter, jet kit, reworked expansion chamber from dirt bike, 1" taller + 1" wider rear tires, dual wenches, Rack on rear/w cargo pac, polaris box on front, Mossy Oak cover on seat, back-up lights on rear, aux. power source for GPS,"Theft deturent's", hand protectors, new clutch springs coming! Would love to find GURU style bumpers! By the way, I'm also a graduate of AMI with over 20 years of motorcycle mechanical experiance. New to quads, but the same basic engines. 2 stroke or 4 stroke!

It has nothing to do with the idle, I do believe that it is 2 washers/spacers on my primary clutch on each side of the engine brake. So I'm gonna try that and hopefully it will fix my problem

I had the same problem with my 01 sportsman. After replacing the front motor mount and trying move the engine a little to the left , I added a second washer to the secondary clutch which was 1/16" wider than the old washer and works perfectly. (I now have 2 washers , one is a little bigger than what was already there) The bike will creep if the belt doesn't ride in the CENTER of the primary clutch pulley.

Hey found the problem for my bike creeping away and the belt ridding on the inside off the primary sheave. there is a brass washer and a composit washer on each side of the one way clutch in the primary for engine brake. the washer wears out and stops the one way clutch from turning causing the belt not to release properly and ridding on the inside of the sheave.

thanks for all the ideas.
