Front axle removal

Hey there,

I have an 07 sportsman 500 and Ive been trying to remove one of the front CV axles. I have removed it from the strut so that the axle is just dangling there. Its my understanding that the whole axle should just pull out of the differential. Are they generally stuck in there or am I missing something? Tips, tricks? Also there is suppose to be a retaining clip on the outer joint inside the boot that I cant see. Should the outer Joint just slip off the spline or is there a retaining clip that I don't see?

thanks,

Brendan

I have a 2012 not sure if they are the same but if you just have it hanging there you should be able to give it a good pull and a slight twist and it should come out. It's prob going to take a little elbow greese though. Pull hard and twist at the same time.

Had a friend of mine with the same problem after hours of trying to pull it out with no success he went to auto zone and ended up renting and using a large dent puller connected to the axle and pulled it out with a couple good pulls.

I've seen some crazy suggestions to include laying the ATV on its side and hanging it from the rafters to get the axle out. Check out youtube you'll there's a lot of info on there too.

Man I don't know then, I'd maybe try what jimmyc suggested, I've never had a problem with one being stuck in there, could be due to the fact that mine is newer, but I still wouldn't think it should be that hard.
