Symptoms of a bad belt?

What are the symptoms of a belt going bad?

My 2006 X2...during a ride today...when I tried to go fast in low, it seemed like the belt was slipping (not going as fast as I expected) and had a shake in the bike like something out of balance. High was fine.

Bad Belt?

Do the clutches go bad (or whatever they call the pulleys the belt rides on)?

Thanks,
Sean

How fast were you going in low? You may have burned the belt a little because long bouts of high speed in low gets the belt very hot.

Might be worth pulling the CVT cover off and seeing what's going on in there.

Sounds a lot more like a driven clutch problem. What you described sounds more like it busted a button or two inside the rear clutch. You need to go inside the clutch area, jack the quad up and run it in gear to see what the clutches ars doing. I'd wait on ordering parts until you do this, because a new belt wont fix the clutch. Let us know what you see.

'96 Xplorer 300 Aftermarket CDI box, K&N filter, jet kit, reworked expansion chamber from dirt bike, 1" taller + 1" wider rear tires, dual wenches, Rack on rear/w cargo pac, polaris box on front, Mossy Oak cover on seat, back-up lights on rear, aux. power source for GPS,"Theft deturent's", hand protectors, new clutch springs coming! Would love to find GURU style bumpers! By the way, I'm also a graduate of AMI with over 20 years of motorcycle mechanical experiance. New to quads, but the same basic engines. 2 stroke or 4 stroke!

Wow 111, that's hot

You could always order a spare belt as it will need replacing eventually anyway. I'm hung up on the fact that it only acts up in low If it was just the belt it would probably act up in high as well Let us know how you make out.

OK...here is the answer to a few questions.

It seems to start about 20 MPH in low on the street. Looking at the RPMs, it appears to be 5k-6k RPM.

Here is a video of it running/revving in neutral and low. Aren't both clutches supposed to be turning in neutral?

I have the belt off it, and other than being a little shiny on the sides of it, I don't really see anything wrong. Small crack next to one cog on the inside of it. Not sure if it is a manufacturer defect or the start of some dry rot.

BGIRARD420...it is 10:23 atm and it is already 90 degrees out there. I am drenched just from taking it apart this far. Sucks getting old. I figured it was showing in low due to it having more power (higher RPM) for the speed. It was hauling my 12 YO daughter (driver) and I (on the back). Probably about 400 lbs. No idea though...just trying to figure it out.

I wonder what the local dealer wants for a belt. I can get it off ebay for about $48 shipped. Might be worth the money just to eliminate it as the cause.

The bike is kind of new to me (6 months?). Probably put 30sh hours on it since I got it. Just noticed it this last trip (had not noticed it prior).

Hmmmmm...belt has a part number 3211113....looks to be for a 2007 or newer bike...mine is a 2006.

Looks like my belt is supposed to be 3211091...????

The one I took off has cogs on both sides of it. The pictures I see of the 3211091 only have cogs on the inside of it. Interchangable?

That's pretty fast for low on this machine. I try not to go over 15 for any sustained period of time.

I think so. This is why they say not to sit/idle in gear for long periods...because the belt will be stationary with just the primary spinning (like in your vid) and will wear a spot in the belt.

Ouch! Glad we only get a few weeks of that stuff up here.

The cogs on both sides won't matter...the ones on the topside are for cooling purposes. However, a wrong belt can be a major issue and there really aren't any that are truely "interchangeable". If polaris wanted a 3211113 on there that's what they would recommend IMO. They only need to be off by a few milimeters to do weird things.

I would buy a proper one for your machine and see if your problems go away. My dealer charges the same price as many of the ebay stores, might be worth giving yours a call.

I don't have a 2006 maintanance manual yet...but looking at the 2007 manual, it says the belt should be 40 14/16 plus or minus 3/16. Mine appears to be a hair over 41. So looks like mine is at the top end of the tolerance for the 2007 belt.

Local dealer closed Sunday and Monday. May just order if off ebay.
