Question 1994 400 Sportsman water in counterbalancer.

Is there any other way for water to get into the counterbalancer other than the water pump? I have disconnected the internal water pump and am running a 12 volt external pump but I'm still getting water in the balancer. Also I have no dipstick on the back of the engine case to check it. Been using the front plug right below the the water pump housing. The hole is there looks like it is filled with some black stuff. No way to get it out. Could the previous owner have broken it off? Were they black in color? Thanks for any help.

the oem counterbalance dipsticks were an aluminum knurled screw-in piece. i don't see how it could've gotten broken,(lost? or fell out, maybe) then rtv'd the fill hole ,then forgot about it.
I don't know that you can completely bypass the water pump area that you are talking about.
