bendix and starter issues

so my 13 year old daughter used the quad for an hour. now when I turn the key, it sounds like hell has broken loose in the starter. the starter engages and the engine starts. but there is a huge noise, like breaking glass. after the engins starts, the noise continues then subsides.

what on earth could she have done.

what is a bendix and can I replace it at home. I am very good with engines and tools. but have not had to rip anything apart on this quad.

this is a 2002 sportsman 500 always garaged, not used alot. looks almost brand new. remington special edition. thanks. tim.

it also called the starter drive. just take the right floorboard off and then take the pull rope cover off and it sets at the top of the flywheel

I have a 2009 800 touring that has been used very lightly. THe starter and drive on that unit is flakey. I am going to have to replace it soon. Dont blame the operator.

try d b electrical. They have a website. You can buy a new starter, starter drive, or both in a kit for about $87. Hope this helps you.

thanks. you seem to know the topic. two more questions
1. the polaris part is like $180 and the ebay veriosn is like $30. does that make sense. why not get the $30 one?
2. another guy says you have to remove the flywheel and you need a flywhell puller. does that make sense. I like your pretty easy description. thanks alot.

ps. my daughter feeels better, but I still wont let her near my harley.

Also Tim I know how you feel when you lend something out and it gets broke. Thats why I hate to lend anything. A good friend of mine wanted to borrow my new Aprillia scooter and I just said NO because if he dumped it he would have had the money to fix. Were still friends although he probably thinks I am a jerk.
