Recommended engine oil NLA through Polaris?

OK here's the deal.
Going to change my oil.
Looked in my manual, 06 sportsman 500 HO calls for 0-40 Synthetic P/N 2871654.

Dealership sends my parts order out the door in a bag and I got PS-4 Plus 2876247.

I called Polaris, and they said the 2871654 superceded into 2876247 and was still available.

Dealer said it is NLA, and they substituted the new 2-50.

The story I got was it supercedes, and Polaris had done this with a lot of their oils. The parts coutners words were "they used to make a lot of different oils, but now they have consoldated and are just using a few. It's what we put in them and recommended, and will be OK".

I'm a little worried that Polaris has done this to cut manufacturing costs without regards to the longetivity of the machine. The manual spells out 0-40, not 2-50.

Should I go aftermarket 0-40 or put in the 2-50?

everything you have been told is true.

IMO, you could run either the 0-40 aftermarket or the 2-50. i dont know if they have research to support the 2-50 over the 0-40, or if it was a cost thing, but they are really so close that i wouldnt worry about. just my .02 though. do what makes YOU feel better. you might be able to get 0-40 cheaper the the PS4 stuff.

hope that helps you

That's funny cuz when I wanted to change the oil in my 09 850 xp, I read my manual which spells out 20w-50. The dealer said that was wrong, that we use 0-40. They 'suggested' I use the PS4 kit which, as he stated directly from Polaris, was 0w-40. Kinda a conflict with the manual yet sold specifically for the xp. ????

I think the manual should have read 2-50.

You would think somebody that knew what the hell one of those machines were would proof read the manual before they print ten thousand of them.

this has been a big debate for a long time, and i dunnot whats what anymore. the PS4+ was a 0w-40, then guys started saying polaris switched it to a 2w-50, some say the have, some say they havent, i dunno. polaris doesnt spell out the weight on the label.

whatever the PS4+ is, it is perfectly safe to use in every 4-stroke polaris motor

IMO, its a marketing thing. They dont tell what the PS4 is. Only that is what you need. So now I cant go buy an aftermarket oil. They always got you one way or another.

I've been running Mobil 1 0W/40 synthetic in my 500SP for years and now I'm running Mobil 1 5W/50 in my '10 850. I've used up the case of 0W40 that I bought a couple years ago, so the next oil change on the 500, it too will be running 5W50.
