Does my 2010 800efi suck? Clutch clicking noise.

I bought a 2010 800 for dirt cheap the other day and I'm not too happy. I've tried searching for other posts by people who have 800's, but I'm not seeing alot. My 800 makes a clicking noise in the clutch housing (on right side)when idling and a clunk noise when slowing down. The dealer's former service manager (now a salesman) told me this was the clutch - actually the cog catching up to the chain. I hopped on a different 800 at the dealer and it did the same thing. Does this make sense? My other ATV is a Grizzly - and I've never heard anything like this. I'm kinda worried about it. Should I be?

I'm going to take a stab at this. I looked at a pic of the clutch and like I thought, it's belt driven. So, first,I don't think the person you talked to at the dealer knows what their talking about, and the chances that two bikes at the same dealer having the same problem(well I guess it could happen). There are shims that are in the clutch to align the primary and secondary. If you take your bike to another dealer, listen for them so say the dlutch is out of adjustment. Hope this helps and good luck

Lemon???

Man. I hope I didn't buy a lemon. Both 800's I rode at the dealership did the exact same thing, so I thought it was normal. Gonna call the dealer again and bring it in. Thanks!

Answer???

So I called the dealership and spoke to the actual service manager. He said that the clicking/clunking sound I am hearing is more than likely not the clutch (like the saleman told me) but rather the sound of one of the tranny chains "slapping" the drain plug. He says the 800's have a very loose tranny chain set up and that when you pull the drain plug you can actually see the marks that the chain from the tranny has made. He recommended that I bring it by and let him personally take a look at it - but if that is the sound I am hearing there is nothing he can do - just a noisy Polaris I guess.

I have the same problem with my 2010 800. when I slow down it sounds like the it's coming a part with the clunking and clanking. It goes into the shop for it's 1st maintenance warranty work on the 21st and I'm telling them to fix the problem to my satisfaction, not theirs or Polaris's.

Good luck. Please let me know the outcome. The local guy here says he's replaced entire trannys with no improvements. Just specific to the 800's and some other models.

I have a 2010 800 that does the samething when you decel. I also asked and I was told that this is normal. I changed my oil at 50 miles and 100 hours to make sure I had all the shavings out of the oil from a new brk-in. I know, Over kill but it gave me time to learn about the machine and give it a good going over. Anyway, no marks on my oil plug so someone was wrong. I was told that the "Clunk" is a common sound when you are slowing down or first starting to go. It will be interesting to hear what you find out. Blueline or one of the others might know more ????

My dad's 08 sportsman touring 800 has a clunking noise when he slows down.. nothing very major, a lot of the older polaris' made that type of noise. But his also has a rattle in the front... we think its just a heat shield/ some type of shield loose...

I know that my new 850 does not have much if any of the noise that the 800s or the older polaris' have.

Their ATVs are awesome.. just wish the older ones were more quiet.
