Sportsman 500 temp light comes on/fan won't auto start?

I've had a problem with my 06 500 H.O. EFI since just after the warranty ran out (of course). More of an annoyance/hit and miss thing, but an issue none the less. Every once in a while, no matter what outside temperature, within the first 2 miles of the day, the HOT-Check Engine light will flash. The fan does not automatically engage. I shut it off immediately, but switch the key back to the "On" or "Run" position and the fan kicks on. I let it run for a few minutes then start the machine back up and continue. The temp is fine, the light won't come on and the fan cycles the rest of the time automatically. Any ideas?? Fan switch? Coolant Temp. sensor?

i had a 2000 sportsman. the temp light and fan stayed on all the time. it was under warranty. but it was the temp sensor. mine was on the radiator. sounds like that might be it.

thanks
