Sportsman 500 no spark. This worked for me.

Sportsman 500 with no or very intermittent spark at first.
After many hours reading people's problems with this or the like i thought i should share with you all what worked for me.
This is on a farm vehicle that never see's any cover & is outside in all weather's.
At first i had come to the same conclusion as most of you about the coil or CDI unit but where do you start & the cost is horrendous.
By some miraculous happening i had a spark one day after it had sat in my garage for a week or more & i was able to start it on the pull as we had burnt the starter out but it was missing & back firing a lot.
All of a sudden it cleared & revved like a good un but what had i done?
Turned out i had turned the steering & then worked out it would misfire turned one way but ok if turned the other way.
Pulled the dash off & it worked ok until i put it back together & i was thinking maybe a wire in the loom breaking down?
Decided to disconnect the speedo from the wiring plug & hey presto it worked a treat & i did notice some water inside the speedo when it was turned upside down.Has to be worth a try if your quad is stuck in a dealers somewhere that they can't fix & only a 5min job to check & this one is rounding up sheep again as we speak.
Good luck.

Nice "catch" incadave. Nive to get something fixed simply isn't it? I think a LOT of problems are basic and simple (maybe not easy) fixes. Time consuming, for sure.
Glad you got it! You could have spent a lot of money for nothing.

Explanations do help. Did you look to see if any critters got in and started chewin? Sounds like a wiring issue, something might be shorting.

No critters found or chafed wires. The recoil housing was full of rusty muddy water when it arrived at the shop . That is all clean now with new stator and pick up coil . All my tests led me too that .
