polaris trail boss won't idle after getting wet

Im starting to figure out why i got such a great deal.

At this point it seems the 87 Trailboss will only start with the assistance of some ether most the time and only run intermittently. I have a second carb that i tried and yes they are both clean as a whistle.
I would give it gas and sometimes it would rev up sometimes it would bog down.
I have done this with the air box off. Would this make that much of an extreme difference in a closed setting?
Any help is appreciated.

Additionally the oil pump input was broken off prior to my ownership so it is running pre mix

well were on to the Saranac sampler. Adirondack Lager is quite tasty.

should i be considering changing out the crank seals? it looks like the top end was gone thru not too long ago i can see new gasket material. the previous owner said it had a new piston and ring.

I was reading through the replies and you may have nailed it with the crank seals. I bought an 88 a few years ago. when I went to buy it the guy told me it was sitting for a few years, he just got it running. I test drove it, it ran ok, so I bought it. After I got it home, the thing was nearly impossible to start (it started right up at the guys house) it ran all erratic and shortly stopped running at all. I thought carb at 1st, but it came down to the crankshaft seals got leaky from not being used. 2 strokes have to be run occasionally to keep the seals wet with oil. They aren't that hard to change really. I still have that bike today, there's pics on my profile. It runs like all hell and is faster than my son's 2001.
