Loud Clanking sound before shuttoff

Today It was running great for about 2 hours when all of a sudden a loud "clanking sound" from the engine followed by shutting down. Cranked back up went about 200 yards did it again. Waited a little longer, went alittle further, shut off. THis time I could hear a boiling sound like someone blowing bubble with a straw in water. I was coming from the gas tank vent hose.
Any Ideas??
