96 Trailblazer 250 engine rebuild question

Hey guys, I'm rebuilding top end on a 96 TB 250.....had no compression, took top end off and found that something had gone thru it and gouged piston and cylinder and had one compression stuck in "compressed" state which meant it wasn't sealing against cylinder at all.

First question, do these things not have reed valves???? I didn't know a 2-stroke could even operate without reed valves....how does that work?

2nd question, is this cylinder nikasil plated? I want to have it bored .020 over but didn't know if I needed to have it re-plated or not....

3rd question, can somebody tell me what torque specs are for cylinder and head? Thanks!!!

the cylinder is not to my knowledge nikisiled or nikil plated ...as for no reed valves the piston un covers the intake port which creates a vacum and the fuel/ air mixtures gets sucked into the crank case and as the piston moves back down in the stroke it forces the fuel/air mixture up the ports in the sides of the cylinder and in to the upper cylinder area where it will be burned im not good at explaining this but im sure someone will chime in !ill try n find a link or a video to help explain if youd like good luck on the rebuild ! im sure youll get it figured out

I just did the same thing with a1996tb. Had the cylinder bored.25 oversize put in new piston, rings gaskets.fired right up when reassembled thought it was fixed. ran for 2 days at the Hatfield McCoy trails on the 3rd day it died. could not figure out what happened.Put it the garage and replaced the pto seal and the crankcase seal. Nothing. Posted a thread on this site, still no answer. It was blowing gas back out the intake. Yesterday, pulled the head and the cylinder, guess what the bottom piston ring was missing about 1/4 of it. I was told before I finished the rebuild that I needed to replace the two seals but I did not. Now I am ordering new rings and gaskets to reassemble. shane-o is pretty close to explaining how a 2 cycle works and also it does not have reed valves. once you pull it apart you will see how it works and why the entire engine needs to be air TIGHT for great performance. Hope this works for you. Good Luck
