I will assume its like my '86...should be 4 bolts that hold the cover on which goes over both the primary and secondary clutch, that needs to come off, also there is a breather tube on top of the clutch cover that is bolted to the frame, that needs to come off also. I had to unbolt my rear fender a bit to get enough clearance for everything to move.

Ok i removed the four bolts and three clips from the belt cover but it still wont come off. Is there another clip? and it looks like theres a gasket holding it on. What do i need to do to get it off?

Generally you check the width of the belt, I cant tell you what a new one measures but at a certain width you should change it, I usually look at the secondary clutch and look how far above the belt sits in the clutch. If the belt is sitting above or even with the outer edge of the clutch it should be fine. I would think you should not go through a belt in 1000 miles.

I would run it as long as it shows no sign of damage or dry rot.
