Installing starter, Problem getting recoil starter assembly off.
I came here hoping that someone could give me a little help with getting the recoil starter off of my wifes 1998 250 Tral Blazer.
I'm installing a new starter in it and I know what parts need to be removed.
I have the skid plate, belt housing and clutches off, but I can't get the recoil starter assembly off. I have removed all six bolts and I think it is just stuck to the engine case. I have beat on it and pried on it and I'm afraid I will break it.
Anybody know how to get it loose. I talked to mechanics at shops near me and they say hey usually came right off.

The bad thing is,some people think using an adhesive is the only way to go. If you can heat it up some around it that might do it. Not too hot though.

Had me thinking so I went out and checked. I have a 96 and a 97. The 96 screws were loose and so was the case.

Sounds like you're doing it correctly. Mine took a whack or two from a rubber mallet and then came off pretty easily. I second the head suggestion. Or spray some Wd-40 or some kind of gasket remover around it and let it sit for a while.

Yesssss! I got it off!
Thanks a lot guys for taking the time to help me.
I am sure glad I found this forum.
broman's suggestion to use WD-40 did the trick. I just soaked the hell out of it and sat back for awhile and was able to pry it right off. I beat it first with a large rubber mallet and that did nothing. I had to pry it away from the case in the front, using the frame as a fulcrum.
I didn't have to try it, but I think lefty's idea about heating it would work.
Thanks again
