i cant remember on your older machine if you have a throttle safety switch...located on the throttle cable itself. if that had too much slack in the adjustment, that could certainly cause these issues.
could also possibly be a faulty ECU

Hi Mike,
Did you ever figure out what was wrong with you trailboss. My 87 is doing the same thing I think. Revs up about half way then seems to pulsate back and forth from trying to go to not trying to go. Since I am holding the throttle open trying to get it to go faster but the rpms won't go up, it does start to smoke a little from being too rich or kinda flooding. Idles perfectly. Lower rpms are smooth and perfect. But try to go over 10mph and it seems like a rev limiter is keeping it from going. Can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Did either of you ever figure out your rev limiter problem. I just bought a 87 trail boss that needed some work done. I got it running but i'm having the same problem, it runs good till about 1/3 throttle then it hits the rev limiter. The over ride switch was broke when i bought it so i took it off and tried running it with the wires apart then i twisted them together neither seemed to help.

Turned out not to be rev limiter. Had an air leak. The intake was cracked and sucking air through at higher rpms causing the effect of a rev limiter. The intake is the short, hard rubber tube that attatches the carb to the cylinder head. Make sure it is not cracked and bolts holding it to cylinder are not loose. Runs like new since I found the leak.
