Let me start by saying that this forum is an amazing resource. I've found answers to many questions I didn't even know I had.
Now that I have that out of the way. A friend has a 2002 (or 01, not sure) TrailBlazer 250 that is very difficult to start.
The electric start will crank all day, but nothing happens. Pull starting it is the only thing that works. Unfortunately, it doesn't work well. You have to hold the throttle about a quarter of the way in and hope you are ready if it catches. Once it is started and warms up, it runs fine. We've ridden trails for hours with no trouble, unless you shut it off. It starts a little easier when it's warm, but not by much.
We have cleaned the carb at least 4 times. He has tried adjusting the choke. Has not checked compression that i know of, but I am going over there this afternoon and, if I can find my kit, I'll check it if need be.
On a side note, I have a 660 Raptor that wouldn't start and saw that a lot of people were having issues with their stator. Unplugging the regulator allowed enough spark for the engine to fire up, but then the battery wouldn't charge. Thankfully, that wasn't my issue, but could something similar be happening with this 250?
Thanks in advance for any ideas y'all may have. We want to go riding this weekend, but that depends on getting this thing running right.
