Broken choke (lever or plunge?? not sure) on 01 TB

Hey guys, just picked up an 01 TB for my GF to ride since she couldn't get hang of the 400ex.

Anyways the machine seems to be in good working order with the exception I bought it with a broken choke (not the cable, the control for it by the key). Can someone tell me what comes on the 01 trailblazer? I searched some pictures, it appears to be a lever, not a plunge? If someone had a picture that would be great, i'd rather try and make a homebrew fix than spend the 40$ for the choke cable/assembly.

Thanks in advance,
-Mike

If it's a lever held in with a roll pin I have one that will fit I think. It is on a 1992 trailboss 350 4x4. Thanks

It's a lever! My lever broke off and I just made a loop in the hole with a small zip tie, works like a charm. You can order a new lever or the whole choke assembly at cheapcycleparts.com for next to nothing.

Sweet, thanks for the replies guys. I picked up the choke control assembly at the local polaris dealer for ~10$, should fit no problem.

I have another question, this time about starting.

Is it normal for the electric start to not keep cranking on this ATV? The electric start turns the engine once, then you hear the electric motor run, but no cranking. I can get it to start after a few tries....

The starter should keep cranking the engine as long as you are holding the button in. I'm not sure what you mean the motor keeps running but engine doesnt crank!? Does it sound like a grinding gear?

sorry I guess it is hard to describe in words. From what you said though, something is wrong with the electric start. No grinding sounds, if you hold the starter button up, the electric start turns over the motor once, then you just hear the electric starter motor turning, but the engine isn't cranking.

BTW, got the choke all fixed up!

Replaced the battery with a pretty new one yesterday, and even tried connecting it to a car battery to ensure it wasn't a charage issue. Always have the same issue. Wondering if it is a solenoid problem??

Replaced the recoil start rope today so at least the bike can be started easily. It starts great with the pull start!

Hmmmm.. man not really sure what it could be without hearing it. I replaced my starter because it only clicked and wouldn't do anything. It sounds like for some reason it's not engaging to turn the motor over, or it's slipping I could do some research and try to figure it out/think about it some more for ya!

The pull start though is always the best to have! I bought a project TB that was missing the string and recoiler, but I went the cheap way and found a pull start string and handle from an old push mower I have that died. It was free, the string and cover would have been $125. and works just as well, just doesn't recoil but It always starts first pull.

BTW...There is no alternator on these quads just an FYI.

thanks again for the replies!

The recoil start is awesome, just picked up some nylon medium duty rope at ace, seems to work fine but we will see how long it holds up, especially with the electric start out of commission for the moment.

I've more or less ruled out the solenoid as the failure, guessing you are right and the starter isn't engaging or slipping. Maybe the bendix gear is toast?

I think I will buy a shop manual before trying to pull the starter out, I hear one of the machine screws is behind the clutch plates sounds like a PAIN!
