88 250 TB starter problem
OK, on to the next problem with this machine!
Starter is dead! (Shocker!) Battery seems fine, as the headlight is nice and bright when I turn the key on.
It does nothing when you hit the button. Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting this?
I was thinking of taking the starter out and hooking it directly to a battery and see if anything happens to eliminate wiring issues. Good idea or bad?
Does anyone have a suggestion of where to find a used or re-built starter? I can only guess the starter for this thing at the dealer would be insaine!!

check the solenoid before ripping the starter out. Also you may want to check the fuse panel to be sure nothing is blown out. Do you hear a clicking when you hit the starter button? if not then the solenoid is not even working which means the solenoid is either bad or there is no power getting to it.

No, I hear nothing. OK, where is the fuse panel and where is the solenoid? How do you check to see if the solenoid is working?

my solenoid is up around the battery, yours may be different. There are 4 wires going to it. two of them are heavy wires which provide the power to the starter to turn. One of these heavy wires comes from the battery the other goes to the starter. Trace the heavy wire from the starter to find the solenoid. The other two wires are smaller and they provide 12v to the electromagnet inside to pull the switch closed which lets power flow directly from the battery to the starter. Since you know your battery is good start with those small wires. One of them is a ground and one is a 12v+ from the starter button. Turn the key on and the engine run switch on and with your multimeter (set on DC) test to see if you have 12v+ at the solenoid when the starter button is pushed on those small wires. If you do then you have a bad solenoid. If there is no 12v+ to either of the leads then you have a wiring/fuse problem. The fuse panel on my atv is up around the steering head under the plastic fairing.
I hope that is clear, it is hard sometimes to describe this stuff in writing.

Yea, I know! But, I've searched this bike high and low, and found no fuse panel. Nothing on the wiring diagram on Polaris's website shows anything about a fuse panel. There is a regulator/rectifier in this spot you mention where your fuse panel is. I don't think that's the same thing.
I'll try to test the solenoid next. What worries me is someone has been messing around in the electrical on this thing. So far, I've found two plug in type wires hanging. One up at the handle bars and another one near the solenoid. Now, they also show a brake light for this bike, but this one doesn't have one. I assume it was taken off and hoping these wires were for it. There is also a small box about 2" by 1", hanging between the negitive of the battery and what looks like a spliced wire in the harness. Not sure what that is, but part of it is duck taped! (Yes, yet another use for duck tape - wiring).
Is there anyone out there with a wiring diagram for this bike? The Polaris parts website frankly stinks!

just checked the manual and they didn't add a fuse panel until 89 so you don't be too put off. here is the Wiring diagram note the box labeled solenoid it has to be there between the starter and the battery. If it's not then you just found the problem anyway this diagram should help to figure things out. It's for all 1985 to 1988 models...

If you need a starter try Starters, Alternators and more for Cars, Trucks, Tractors and ATVs and as far as the solenoid you can use a single post lawnmower solenoid Primeline part#701861-1 available at Carquest or NAPA auto parts stores about $11.00.

great advice on the solenoid, they are all pretty much standard once you understand how they work. As long as you get one for a 12v system...

Thanks for the help here. Got it working like a champ! Turns out, the switch for the starter on the handlebar had excessive build up and wasn't getting connection. Cleaned off the brass, and put on a new solinoid as suggested above, and wam. Starter works great!
