Trailboss 250 2x4 two-stroke backfiring

Hi all, I'm 16 and I bought my first ATV back in the late fall of 2011. My problem is I can't get it to stop backfiring! I just ordered a new carb rebuild/needle kit and will see if that will help to fix the problem. Any advise?

Does it backfire when you let off the throttle? If so, it could be that the throttle cable is #1 getting slightly stuck, or #2 it needs to be adjusted.

If it is getting stuck, it is emulating 'being stuck wide open', and trying to kill the engine while there is fuel being brought into the engine. (I had this problem on a 2001 Scrambler 400 after I bypassed the oil pump, but neglected to run a single throttle cable. the stock throttle cable is dual pull, one to pull on carb, one to pull on oil pump.) I ordered the single cable for it.

If yours is getting stuck, you need to try to lube it first. If that doesn't work you'll need to get a new throttle cable.

This video explains it better than I can put in words.

Good luck!

update

Hi guys, thanks for the great advise. I checked the throttle/oil cable[s] and they were working great. I don't think the rubber intake boot has any cracks, but I will check that. I installed the rebuilt carb, a brand new airfilter, a new gasline, fuel filter, and oil filter. And it would not start! I checked the spark, and sure enough has intermittent spark only about once every 2-3 seconds! I took off the pullstart/side cover and the flywheel is stuck! My three-prong puller won't fit into the two holes in the flywheel. So I can't get at the stator. I'm wondering if some of the wiring is messed up. What should I check first?
Thanks a lot guys!

Peter

Hi guys, I just finished rewiring the lights and indicator-bulbs. I also remembered that (a month ago) when I replaced the coil and CDI box, I could not get the bottom half of the coil on tight, the wrenches just did not fit. So I tightened up the coil, and now it runs like a Honda! (A Honda chainsaw) It rips! Thanks for all the great advise!

Hi guys, I put a new battery in "The Boss" and fixed the headlight. When driving I heard a thumping coming from the clutch/belt shroud, I started to take the shroud off and then got interpreted. So I'm going to try to fix whatever that is tomorrow.

Hi guys, the bumping is just the nicks in the older belt making some noise, no big deal.

If your old belt is beat up, try getting a new one. You might be shocked at how much power you were missing from the old belt slipping.
