850 xp backfire

i have about 80 miles on my 2010 xp 850 and several times while riding it has backfired. it usually happens when going down hill or after i let out of the throttle from doing about 30-40mph. i have not had it over 50mph yet and have been really taking it easy on it so as to properly break it in. any ideas on why it backfires

how many miles did you put on it for break in? i was told to run 2 tanks of fuel through it and i have ran about 1 1/4 tanks in it and have 80 miles and it still backfires

This is a normal issue on thes machines.

It has to do with the tps adjustment.

Mine did it a few times when new. Now I have not had it happen in about a year and half. I think you just learn how ride it without the backfire.

It has to do with your engine breaking system (EBS) an d will do it if you suddenly let off your throttle when your moving. It does it mainly when new and will decrease over time. Our 2011's now have 400+ miles on them and our rides are usually about 40-60 miles each and ours both did it a lot (4-5 times) during our first ride (we ride somewhat agressively), and then less our second ride, less again our third ride, etc. Now at 400+ miles after several rides they hardly ever do it, I think my brothers did it once the entire last ride and mine didn't do it at all. Some of it is the machine breaking in and the rest is you learning the machines quirks and over time as it breaks in the backfires will all but go away.

Thumbs up

My '09 SP XP 850 was doing the same...and would have a backfire every now and again...the thing...is it was loud...and scared folks that were near. Oops!

I found this video on youtube...so here is the procedure to adjust the trottle cable. Hope this helps...

My '09 backfired a few times on me when it was new, dealer adjusted the throttle sensor and it's been fine since.
