12 850 pinion cover necessary???

Just got a 12 850 ho and have been reading about the pinion cover deal. I plan on keeping it pretty much stock maybe someday some different 26" tires. Is it necessary to replace that cover? How many stock ATVs have broke them? Thanks for any advice

I have 3800 miles on mine and I had 27" XTR's and have not had any issues, but now I have 28" Terminators, so I think I will put it on mine, but for you, to be honest if you are smart about using 4 wheel drive you should be fine, like if your out on a frozen lake, just throw it in 4x4, I think some have had issues where they hammer it and the back tires spin so hard in 2 wheel drive and then the diff locks in randomly and Boom.. Also in Reverse at full throttle some have had issues, but I have a youtube showing me hammering it backing out of a hole and again no issues. (my youtube name is shaner7757 and it is the one I push out a stuck Grizzly)

Just make sure and change all the fluids if you haven't and I recommend using Polaris fluids, but most will recommend something after market...

I have been rolling the dice, no cover, 950 miles on mine so far so good. I would do the upgrade but I don't want to loose the ADC. Seems like I'm one of the few who like using it. That being said, 95% of my riding is trail riding so I rarely need to use 4wd except for steep hill climbs and creek crossings.

I think alot depends on your riding style. Will you be putting it in deep mud, technical rock climbing? In both of those cases I would replace the cover if it were me.

It can happen in any situation. Specifically in 2wd.

No deep mud mostly trail ridding. It breaks in 2wd more than 4 if your spinning the tires?

I thought it was only happening in 2wd with newer sportsman with the "close ratio" AWD where the 4wd was accidentally engaging despite being in 2wd. I thought older 850s usually only broke while AWD was engaged.

Has it also happened on older bikes in 2wd? Maybe i need to reconsider my gamble...

The risk is a 1500$ parts bill, downtime and the hassle of swapping the diff if you do it yourself, You may never need it but 170$ was cheap insurance and peace of mind too me.
I tell everyone with an XP about it so at least they are informed, as this is the 1 main weak spot with pricey repair.
