XP 550 Oil Used??

I just bought a used 2011 550 with 213 miles on it. The dealer changed the oil before I bought it so I should be good for awhile. I was looking at the oil spec in the manual and it lists 2w-50. The only supplier I can find is Polaris and they want $$$$$ for a quart. What types and weights of oil have others used? Or should I just bend over and get the Polaris oil?

Welcome to the forum!!!!!!! As long as you use a Good Name Brand Full Synthetic Oil you'll be fine. 0W-40 to 5W-50 will work. Lets see there's Amsoil, Castrol, Mobil 1, Shell Rotella to name a few. I personally use Mobil 1 0W-40. Most members here use Mobil 1, Amsoil, Shell Rotella, also will not go above a 5W oil.

^ That pretty much covers it. Any good synthetic with a low number of 0-5 and a high number of 40-50 will do just fine.

I've run the Polaris stuff, Amsoil, and Mystik synthetic, all with good results. I haven't run Mobil 1 because I can only find it in 10W-40 and 20W-50 around here. I think next oil change I'm switching to Rotella T6 5W-40. It's $21 for a gallon jug at Walmart, plus they have Purolator filters for $3 and some change. That means I can change the oil in both of our machines for less than 30 bucks. Can't change the oil in one machine for that price with the stuff from the stealership.

The "2W-50" is just a numbers game to make you think that you have to use the stuff from Polaris since no one else sells a 2W-50 oil.

Thanks for the information guys. I just went out today and brought home a 2013 550 Stealth LE EPS. Sharp looking machine. Looked through the manual and realized that they requested 2w50 oil. Unfortunatly for me I just bought a bunch of 0w40 shell that my 500 used. I guess after reading your comments, I will be OK. I can use it up in the 550. TIP.

Yep, if it was good in your 500, it will be good in the 550. Polaris recommends the same oil in all their ATV engines.

I've always used the Polaris brand oils...and not concerned with the price necessarily. But...I don't put 1000's of miles per year either. So...understand your hesitation to use the Polaris brand...

This is the company that makes the Polaris oils:

Great local company here in the Twin Cities actually. At my work, we get all of our oils, chemicals, and fuel for our fleet from them, and we do some local deliveries for them too. If Polaris would charge a more reasonable price for the stuff, I would be using it.

I've run rotella t6 5w-40 since I picked up my '11 850xp with no problems. I change my oil every 100hrs and it still looks good plus it's only $21 a gallon at walmart.
