slyder01..my unit's P/S also exhibited the same symptoms you describe.as well as some others. Hopefully you find a competent technician..what you are describing is a problem..and it will most likely be the P/S motor.

I have a lot of confidence in my dealer, especially what they went through and did to get my valve cover that was on back order and wasnt being released until May 7th. They got it on the 5th and had my machine ready that day and i was able to make the club ride that weekend. Also they are going to extend my warranty for the time it was in the shop which was 3 weeks.

It's funny now, today i put new tires on and it seems fine, besides all the noise it makes, when i had it jacked up and no tires on, holy crap! the thing made such LOUD noises and vibration.
Called my dealer today, but a little late, the tech was gone.

Hopefully this is an isolated incident but something else to watch out for on the 2010 850 Sportsman XP. Bought mine the end of May and the shift lever was hard to move at times. The dealer said that was normal, but something still didn't feel right. 2 weeks ago the entire shift lever stripped out and I was stuck in reverse. Luckily I was out of the woods and could back the trailer close. It appears the clutches were out of alignment and could not shift properly. The dealer could not even manually shift out of reverse with a pair of vice grips. Only reason this may not be isolated is when I went for an ATV saftey training course someone else had a 2 up 850 XP and was experiencing the same issue. I am not a Polaris basher, I love the ride from the XP, just a warning so you won't get stuck somewhere when the shifter strips out.

if the shifter feels real hard to shift while out riding, dont force it, turn the machine off, then shift it.. that will work until you get the problem fixed.

I rode all the other brands before I rode the 850 xp and its the best riding and well thought of quad. I will probably have these problems also but I will deal with them. I don't think there is another quad out there now to compare to the 850 xp. I know. I know the can-am's power and speed. But I really don't think its well rounded like the 850 xp is. Just my 2 1/2 cents. I am not Polaris loyal. I owned alot of other quads and older Polaris quads also. But with this new design of the XP I think its the best one out there.
IMHO Polaris has the best riding atv in the business period with the XPs and even with the older 500/800 bodystyles.....However as an overall 4wheeler, it is not in the same league as Can Am atvs PERIOD. Especially in the engine and reliability department. I would not even compare the two.
Yeah Can Ams cost more. But its a gaurentee that you will have more money tied up in a Polaris for maintenance over a 2 to 4 year period than you will in a Can Am. Yeah Can Ams have some issues and some lemons, but nothing like Polaris.
I can honestly say though that I would still buy one (Polaris) over any Japanese atv out there.
I've been a loyal Polaris owner for 6 years and I would buy another one in a heartbeat, but dragging out the toolbox out all the time gets old sometimes.

Well I've got around 1000 miles on my 2010 and don't think I'm having any of the problems with wheel bearings, or power steering unit. I'll double check the wheels out later today but have not noticed anything. If something is going out I'll chime back in. I've never been in a mud hole over 4" deep and running stock offset wheels with 26" Bighorns. I have been down many rocking, rutted out roads at high speeds so if anything is going to fail it is a good test.

I have 1200 hard miles on mine, all my a-arm bushes are loose which that happened 500 miles ago. The machine is a maintenance nightmare, for greasing i mean, wish popo would put sealed bushings in. As for the engine, no problems there, runs great nd tons of power and love the smoothness of the ride and the power steering and that's why the parts get beat to crap. You don't feel the heaviy rock hitting.

I know one thing, ITP XTR tires don't hold up to the abuse an 850xp can put out... my right rear side wall got 4 plugs in it, all at once and 2 weeks ago i got a quarter size blow out in the other rear in which i had to order another one and these tires only have 500 miles..

I stand corrected on my mileage I've only gone 600 miles but just blocked mine up and tried to find anything loose and either I don't know what to look for or nothing is worn out. I know what wore tie rod and wheel bearings act like and mine are still tight. A-arm bushing don't have any play yet. I did have my fittings all greased at 20 hour oil change.
One thing I need to stress most of my riding is mountain and desert so I rarely get in much water other than a occasional mud puddle I can't go around and my wheels are the stock off set and this is a 2010 January build. Not sure if they made any changes from first year.
