Winch mount for Warn XT40 on 850 XP??

Hey guys I am looking for some help. I would like to get a Warn XT40 and mount it to my 2010 Sportsman XP 850 but I can not find a mounting plate for it anywhere specifically for an ATV. The Warn 40 series has a larger spool but actually it is not much bigger than the Warn 30 series so I think it will fit. I know it is designed for UTVs and 75% of you are thinking why I would need a 4000# winch on an ATV. Simple, overkill is added insurance depending on the places you ride and if it can be done I will do it. I am not a welder so doing a custom mounting plate is out of the question. Polaris and KFI are the only mounting plates I have heard of for the 850 XP and they will not fit the mounting holes on the XT40. Are there any other manufacturers I should try? If custom is the only way to go, who should I contact about getting this done? I am ordering the ATV Guru brushguard so I was going to contact John and see what he has to say. Any other ideas out there? Thanks

KFI emailed me back and said that the Warn 40 series would not fit on my ATV. Has anyone tried this yet? The demisions on the 30 series are:
13.12" L x 4.51" D x 4.69" H
And the 40 series demensions are:
14.42" L x 4.51" D x 4.69" H
So the 40 series is the same size only 1.3 inches longer. From the pictures I have seen it looks like there is room for the 40 series since the depth and height are exactly the same. Can someone tell me if there would be a clearance issue on something I am missing? The weight difference between the two is less than a pound and besides the higher rating capacity, you get a larger spool by over 1.5 inches to hold more cable/syn. rope. Thanks

I have an XT30 in a KFI mount it barely fits. With a spool 1.5" bigger (your description) I just don't think it will fit.

Just get the XT30. Its a great winch and more than enough power for the XP. The XT40 is made for UTV's.

I got the viper max 4000# winch with synthetic rope on my 2010 850 xp. It works flawless and can pull anything I've tried so far and cost alot less.

That's a good winch too! I have one on my SP800. Its the 3K unit. Much lower price than the Warn.

drilling the mounting plate may be an option to your issue

I thought this might work as well but there is not enough material on the Polaris or KFI mounting braket. The 30 series bolt pattern is: 3.0" x 4.88". Where as the 40 series bolt pattern is: 3.0" x 6.66".
Looking at pictures of the KFI mounts, there is just not enough width on the bracket to drill a 6.66" pattern.

Thanks loadbreak, you might be right on this one. Unfortunately I am deployed and can't figure things out visually so I am relying on advice from guys like you and pictures from the internet. Plus I don't have the funds to buy stuff to see if it will fit to come to a conclusion that it won't and I am out close to $800 bucks. Thanks for the reply.

Did you read my post?I know the XT40 is made for UTVs and I am sure the XT30 is probably more than enough "power" for your applications. However, it will not be enough "power" for the type of terrain that I will be riding in. Plus, I am the type of guy to go beyond limits and max perform equipment as they were designed to. Without getting into details, I feel that the XT40 is the size winch that I am going to need.
At least we agree on one thing; the XT30 is a geat winch. If I wanted to take it the easy way I wouldn't be asking questions, I would just throw on the XT30. All in all thanks for your opinion, I do appreciate it.
