Polaris Sportsman WV: Best Buy of the Week

2014 ATV features non-pneumatic tires

Each week our editors scour the ATV.com classifieds to look for an interesting ATV or UTV to highlight for our readers.

This week we found a particularly interesting ATV – the Polaris Sportsman WV, which a private seller listed for $9,499.

This ATV features some technology originally designed for military use, including the very cool non-pneumatic tires that feature a web design instead of air, so flats are a thing of the past. Other features include Polaris’ 850cc four-stroke engine, cast-aluminum wheel, electronic power steering, brush guards, and heavy duty steel front and rear racks that loaded with tie-down points and can each carry up to 600 pounds.

2017 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 Review

Brutally powerful ATV gets refined

From the start the Polaris Sportsman has been a force to be reckoned with, but in the model year 2017 the new Sportsman XP 1000 will make any Polaris loyal drool.

In a brief visit to the mountains of Great Falls, Mont., we had the opportunity to get under the bars of this machine for a few hours. The looks are inspiring and the feel of the powerful 952cc fuel injected engine is empowering to say the least. It was a chance encounter on a long trail that allowed us to get more familiar with the ride that Polaris says is RAD! That is short for Rider Active Design and here is how it played out for us.

Knowing the biggest displacement ATV produced by Polaris would get some much due attention, it was our goal to not only search out the key features but to try and test, if only briefly, each one. The power delivery of the Sportsman’s engine can now be modulated in three different fashions. This is what Polaris refers to as its tri-mode throttle control. Most will never realize that this is also a throttle-by-wire system either…surprise!

Why Is My ATV So Difficult To Start
Jan 20, 2017 - 12:20 PM - by ATV.com

ATV AnswerMan looks into a problem Honda Rancher 400

When my Honda Rancher 400 sits for a day or more, gas drains back to the tank making it a five-minute crank to start. What can I do to fix this?

Joe Howard

Hi Joe,

Well there is one thing that is for certain, the gas is not draining back into the tank. The tank on your TRX400FM sits well above the carburetor (right between your legs under the handlebars) and cannot return once it leaves via the petcock. There are several things that can be causing the slow start, though, so let’s look at a few options to try and figure out your issue. Since you did not list the year I have to guess it’s at least a 1995 to 2007 variant of the Rancher, as these were the years a 400cc engine was built for the Rancher models.

One of the reasons a carbureted engine is a little tough to start sometimes is the compression of the engine is too low to draw ample fuel into the cylinder to burn. If the rings, piston or cylinder are not working properly, not enough suction or compression is produced to pull the fuel in. Do a compression test to determine if the engine is within spec according to Honda’s service manual.

Another problem you might encounter are the valves not being set in the correct tolerances or being worn past service limits, causing what are essentially timing issues. Shimming or adjusting the valves needs to be performed by a service tech or experienced mechanic, as you can cause more damage by not getting this service done correctly the first time.

These are all real issues that a trusty old ATV will encounter sooner or later and if you do not service the engine properly in the timely intervals required by the manufacturer, then you will see it sooner rather than later. Look at these items carefully and I think you
