Polaris is awaiting consumer response to a new, quiet electric all-terrain vehicl |
Mar 11, 2010 - 6:46 PM - by redneck2725
|
Except for the sound of tires rolling on the ground, the latest generation of Polaris all-terrain vehicles moves almost silently across a snowy field.
Powered by an electric battery instead of a gasoline engine, the new Ranger EV (for electric vehicle) is in sharp contrast to its noisy predecessors, sounding more like an electric golf cart cruising down a fairway. Also missing is the exhaust generated by a gas engine.
The midsize, two-seat vehicle is aimed at a green audience that likes quiet as well as a rechargeable energy source. It has the longest range and largest battery pack of any midsize ATV in production today.
Whether it will convert critics who contend that all-terrain vehicles can be disruptive to the environment is up in the air.
But for now, the vehicle is being marketed to hunters who don't want to scare away their prey, farmers and ranchers who don't want to disrupt their animals and homeowners with multi-acre lots who want to haul cargo without disrupting their neighborhood.
A modified version of the EV is also aimed at a U.S. military that is in the market for vehicles that are both fuel-efficient and can be used at low speeds on and off the road.
Polaris received notice two weeks ago from the U.S. General Services Administration that it has approval to sell the low-speed electric vehicle to government agencies, including its most likely customer, the Defense Department. The company has begun to accept government orders, but declined to give details. No large-scale contracts have been announced.
"This [GSA approval] doesn't guarantee them anything, but I'm sure we'll hear about it [sales] down the road," said Robert Evans, a stock analyst for Craig-Hallum Capital Group who follows Polaris. "Their military business has done very well, and electric is a segment they're interested in growing.
"It's a nichey... [Read More]

Polaris Defense Awarded Contract with the General Services Administration |
|
Feb 18, 2010 - 5:47 PM - by dascrow

Polaris Defense, a division of Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today announced the company was awarded a new contract with the General Services Administration (GSA) to sell the Polaris all electric, on-road and off-road Low Speed Vehicle (LSV), known as the Polaris EV LSV, to Government Customers.
Polaris Defense currently sells a portfolio of vehicles via GSA, on Schedule 78, but under the new contract, the company can sell its EV LSV under Schedule 23V which is specifically for vehicles that meet the LSV requirements. The Polaris EV LSV is the only 4 wheel drive vehicle on GSA Schedule 23V. Polaris Defense’s new contract number for the Polaris EV LSV is GS-30F-0017W.
“The award of this GSA contract allows Polaris Defense to provide an innovative, leap-ahead four-wheel drive, electric vehicle to our government customers, while giving them a centralized purchasing point to buy our products,” said Mark McCormick, managing director of Polaris Defense. “Using electric LSV vehicles such as the Polaris EV LSV directly supports the US Government initiative to ‘Go Green’ on its installations and facilities.”
The Polaris EV LSV is based off the RANGER EV platform, Polaris’ first off-road, electric vehicle, and includes the necessary features including horn, turn signals, automotive-quality windshield and rear view mirror, for on-road use. With its 30 horsepower electric motor, quiet operation, 50 mile range and 25 mph top speed, the Polaris EV LSV is the most-capable LSV available for government use. Tough and reliable, it boasts a 1,000-pound payload capacity, 1,250 lbs. of towing and On-Demand True All-Wheel Drive for harsh terrain making it a strong work partner. More information about the Polaris EV LSV can be found at www.polarislsv.com ... [Read More]

The RANGER RZR continued its winning ways by sweeping the podium at Pit Bull Tires King of the Hammers race. With a field double the size of last year's, and five manufacturers represented, the RANGER RZR dominated the 58-mile race that featured a variety of terrain including flat lake beds, steep rocky canyons to brutally-rough desert sections.
First place went to defending champion and solo racer, Mitch Guthrie. Guthrie piloted his No. 555 RANGER RZR across the finish line ahead of RANGER RZR No. 11 piloted by Kyle Knosp. In third, was Brandon Schueler with the No. 1919 Jagged X/Polaris Racing rock RANGER RZR that was featured on the TV show, Destination Polaris.
King of the Hammers is a week full of off-road fun that continues to grow each year with spectators and competitors coming from all over the world. The King of the Hammers Side-by-Side race took place on Thursday, February 1, the day before the full-size buggy main event.
