Poor sportsman looks like it wasn't too deep there?

We might go out on the lakes around us this weekend, are there any tips to help avoid dangerous areas? The ice is 8-10" in most spots right now.

We got her picked up a bit in the picture, It was still only about 4' deep but frickin cold, 8 mile run back to shelter. Watch for ice heaves and dark patches. Lakes should be OK. We ran this section last weekend with no problems but it is a river and always changing. The deepest spot we have ever found has been 2' so this was a real surprise.

The water is clean as long don't run it with motor full water. Take it home give the motor good flushing and will be good go.

Damn, now ya gotta dry and flush everything lol. Oh well, river riding is a blast but has its hazards. We were riding sleds few yrs ago and happened upto these guys so we helped fish his sled out, kinda same thing, river lever dropped a bit and heaved by shore making it weaker, and that guy found the weak spot.

River ice makes me uneasy, personally... as the current and water level can change the ice from one day to the next.

Glad you got it out and everyone was okay!!

As for tips for lake / ice riding.....

At 8-10" inches you'll be just fine.... 4-6"+ should be more then adequate for an ATV.

Other things to look for, some may already have been mentioned, but worth mentioning again:

- dark ice = weak / unsafe ice.
- pressure ridges = ice sheets that has heaved up as they 'grow' and move.
- area's near river / contributory inlets = current will cause thin or weak ice conditions.
- I'd also stay away from any area's with rushes or cat tails = as these can also cause the water to not freeze properly and create slushy or weak point/area's.
- Also watch out for frozen obstacles on the ice, examples being: ice fishing holes or spear house ice blocks (which should be put back when house is moved).

Enjoy have fun and be safe!!

Sprint25 - which rivers are you running?

Near Minneapolis we usually run the Crow River.

We jump on near Waconia and head north, pit stops in Watertown and Delano. We can usually get past Rockford before the river opens up a bit, so we turn around. Very twisty, winding River. We usually put on about 100 miles round trip.

We look forward to it every winter, but usually wait until a real cold snap to make sure it is froze up good. Most of the river is only knee deep, so if we do break through it's not an issue.

We run the Maple from Mankato to Goodthunder. It's 11 miles on the highway and 48 one way on the river. Also a small windy river usually not more than 2' deep.
