Winch Help

I've had the winch in my signature for 5 years now, 90% of the time it is just used for plowing. The last couple of times I plowed I noticed it moving really slow. The battery is good, checked connections and all were good. The next time I used it all it did was click, no in - no out. Still needing to plow I swapped an old 2000# Champion winch in without changing anything else and everything works as it should.
Today I hooked up the KFI to an in-out switch and a less than fully charged battery. Tried both in & out and it worked, although seemed a little slow. I don't know a lot about the internal winch workings, so my questions are if I take it apart-what should I look for as far as fixing it? Or am I wasting my time and 5 years is about the lifespan of a winch? Thanks for reading.

It's hard to say if "it's worth it or not", until you open it up to look.

I'd look for rust, dust (from worn brushes) or worn mechanical parts for starters.... I'm guessing brushes or brush dust causing "grounding/short circuit" type issues.

After disassembly, I'd...

1) Clean it out, by blow it out with compressed air hose and/or electric contact cleaner
2) Re-lube anything that should be lubed (bushings, gear teeth, ect), with a light coat with dielectric grease as at 5 years old it may gave dried out.
3) Re-assemble and test!!
Note: Should you find any rusty components, clean them up with steel wool.

Good Luck!
