New, but not so new.. Confused yet?

The wife and I have been ATV riders for over 4 years, our two daughters just over 3. My brothers have been riders for 7yrs, and insisted we give it a try. The wife and I started out with Arctic Cat 250's 2x4 2000's off of Craigslist for $2100 for the pair 4yrs ago, not knowing if we were going to enjoy it. A year later our two daughters wanted to ride, so we purchased 2 quads a Alphasports Cobra 180, and a Coolster 110cc. We have since upgraded three machines at the end of summer last year. We sold our old Arctic Cats for $2200 ! The wife and myself got Rancher 420's 4x4 IRS, and found a used 2003 Honda Recon 250 for the oldest (AlphaSport 180 is currently for sale). I have been a member on for about 6 months, of course the handle I use there is taken here .. However, we have gone through hell with our youngests Coolster "Chinese knockoff!", two engines, bent axel, 3 starters, and master cylinder! No more! She is at the age where she is still to small for anything over a 90. It is really hard to find a used brand name 90-150cc quad in good shape, and at a good price. Only 4 brands stuck out, Polaris, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Arctic Cat.

We found a 2007 Polaris 90 Sportsman on Craigslist for $1300, and paid $1100. Lets just say it needs some work! No front brakes, a rattle behind the clutch cover, no power and a rough idle, kick start would bounce back, the starter spun freely, and the rear tires were even on backwards. However, the machine cosmetically was in great shape!

I have since rebuilt and cleaned out the carb, replaced the spark plug, drained and replaced the fluids, and ran SeaFoam. The engine now has its life back for under $50!!! We noticed that the starter sounded like it wasn’t engaging. Figured that it might have some stripped gears, or something. Took the clutch cover off and saw that the gears spinning as they should, however the variator was failing to spin. I noticed that there were two screw heads have sheared off laying at the bottom of the clutch case. After removing the variator assembly, I saw the part with the sheared screw heads sheared off of (Polaris exploded view) 0454642 Asm., Wheel Starter, Kick. After doing some research, it seems they did a revision of the part minus the screws. Wheel starter “one way clutch” is in two parts now, thus causing the starter gears just to spin w\o engaging the variator. I ordered the following after noticing some wear, wheel starter (failed), roller weights, kick pinion, clutch one way, and clutch gasket. Will let you know how it goes once it is put back together!

Two 2013 Rancher AT's 420 IRS 4WD for me and the wife
