Sounds like it is not getting enough air or too much fuel. Did it sit for a while before it started doing this?

Could be a mouse nest or other restriction in the exhaust. Maybe throw the muffler on a hot fire for an hour.

So I just cracked the airbox lid and the sputter goes away. Going to adjust my air screw out half turns at a time and see if that helps

You don't have an air screw, you have a fuel screw - adjust it in 1/4 turn at a time to lean it out, but it only affects idle - for the open throttle problem you need to go to a smaller main jet to get to run the same as taking the air box lid off - what size main jet does it have in it presently?

That's not the jet, that is the slide needle - the slide needle mates with the needle jet (the needle jet is commonly referred to as the emulsion tube or main jet holder) the main jet is what secures the needle jet in the carb body.

But if you have it running satisfactorily just by changing the air box lid, don't sweat it, just ride it.
