1996 sportsman, no spark

Hello everbody, i am new to this forum.

I have a 1996 Sportsman 500 and i am not getting spark to the plug.

What i think led up to the problem:

The only thing i know is, i had a dead short in the battery out in the woods.
I hooked a jump pak to it, and it still would'nt turn over.
Thinking it WAS a dead short, i disconnected the battery. After i hooked the jump pak back up, it started right up, and drove it home.

A few days later, i went to start it and there was nothing. No spark.

I called a guy at a shop and he said you can not run that atv without a battery hooked up or it will fry something.
I cant remember what he said it was.
This model year does not have the Surefire module.

Any ideas anybody?
Regulator, fuse, relay, stator?

Thank you very much
Ron

There's a breaker right next to the battery in a plastic cover. If it gets to hot, it'll click off and when it cools turn back on. Sounds like that's what happened to you.

'96 Xplorer 300 Aftermarket CDI box, K&N filter, jet kit, reworked expansion chamber from dirt bike, 1" taller + 1" wider rear tires, dual wenches, Rack on rear/w cargo pac, polaris box on front, Mossy Oak cover on seat, back-up lights on rear, aux. power source for GPS,"Theft deturent's", hand protectors, new clutch springs coming! Would love to find GURU style bumpers! By the way, I'm also a graduate of AMI with over 20 years of motorcycle mechanical experiance. New to quads, but the same basic engines. 2 stroke or 4 stroke!

Thanks RENOBADBOY!
Is this a reset, or replace part type repair?

Thank You for your reply.

Actually, this happened back in 2001, and has been in storage ever since.
So i think i can rule out breaker cool down. Is there a manual reset on it?
Anybody know where i can get a wiring diagram?
The starter does turn over, but the lights don't work, except for the blue high beam indicator which does.
I think it may be something under the front access cover maybe?
My closest dealer went out of business, and the next closest is quite a way from here.
I called them and they said they had no idea, but bring it in. I really don't have that kind of money for a witch hunt.
Just let there be spark.
ANY more sugestions would be highly appreciated.

Thank you all

Check out this link, it is very informative.

1996 Polaris sportsman 500. Electrical problem. If the hub - JustAnswer

I posted this link in a similar thread so anyone following that thread would see it too.
I am not trying to keep this thread on top, just returning to the community information i thought to be helpful to others and my situation.

From this information, i have gained weak intermitent spark now. What would likely cause this? CDI, ETC, Coil?
Thank You,
Allmudd2
