Need some sugestions, please. I have a 99 sportsman 500. Whem I'm riding and I hit a good sized rock or bump, I hear a clunk sound front left side, everything looks ok , but I just started looking. Was just wondering if it sounded familiar to anyone, thanks
check the ball joints. grab the top of the wheel and try to shake it back and forth. if it moves and feels loose it is a ball joint issue. i just replaced mine on my '10 850
Sounded like it came from the clutch, clutch was showing issues, replaced, clunking noise still there, but not as evident. Appears to come from clutch cover but all is well in there now. Am thinking issues with front wheel drive but there doesn't appear to be ant excessive wear anywhere - any ideas??
Good advice, was by myself and still unsure so I reached in and grabbed the CV at the front drive end, a little too much play for me so I ripped the whole thing down, other side was quite solid so I think maayybe replace this side- ball joints are sure bad and rear wheel bearings need help too - got some work ahead of me
From what you describe, it sounds like the same noise I was hearing on my 600 twin. I was sure it sounded like it was coming from the clutch until I grabbed the front prop shaft and got movement! Took it out and the first time I grabbed it and twisted, I got movement in the front u-joint. And I was never able to duplicate it, but replaced it and the noise was gone on the next ride. Even after I had the cross out, I could not seen or feel anything that would cause it. As long as you have it apart, i would check it.
For Stave7119 - It was exactly as you wrote, left side seemed to have a sideways movement that made me rip it out and I believe that might be the issue, the other side has no movement. I do not see anywhere on-line or in the books on how to check for a flawed CV so I too will replace it. It's not that hard to do. Rear wheel bearings are getting loose as well and the ball joints are finished, glad I got in there when I did. Thanks for the info. -20 outside, good time to be in the shop
Mine was not the axle CV joint, but the front drive shaft from the transmission to the front diff. Funny how the sound can travel. A loose CV would explain it too, the joint loads on the uphill side of the bump and unloads on the downhill side causing the clunking noise. I have a list of things for all the machines for the winter months. Not 20 below here, but when it gets in the teens it's too cold in the workshop to get anything done, so I work on the ATVs in the garage....heated. By this time next year, I will have the workshop finished and be able to work in there.....
