1997 Polaris Magnum 425 4x4

Ok I just received a 1997 Polaris Magnum 425 4x4, from my late uncle. Now it has a few issues that I am wondering about. It has about 3500 miles on it now.

1. What maintaince needs to be done and how often, I would guess it will see about 25 miles a year worth of use, and be stored in a climate controlled garage. But I would guess its been many years since anything has been done to it.

2. Where is the best place to pick up replacement parts reasonably priced, it needs the coolant tank, the 90 degree nipple, and a new hose. It also needs the plastic cover that covers the rear disc brake.

3. At some point the 4x4 failed, and he removed the front chain. And to make it work he has a wire holding the override button down...is this acceptable? If not is it worth really fixing the 4 wheel drive or not?

This is a great forum!

I have a 95 425 Magnum that I picked up awhile ago, after alittle TLC, this quad is Great!! Yes, it's worth fixing the 4 wheel drive. This thing will go places you wouldn't think you could go.
The first thing I would do is change all the fluids and change all of filters and spark plug. You can get basic parts at any auto parts store. For the other parts, Ebay or some other places online, also would be a good idea to find a good Polaris dealer nearby.
As far as maintainance goes, it depends on how and how much you ride. Just keep an eye on the quad and this should last for years.

Mine actually looks just like your avatar. I just don't know whats wrong with the 4x4, and fixing it is probably outside the budget.

I'd like to add that you can safely take the wire off of the Override button, as it is only for engaging the AWD when you go reverse!

Depending on WHY the AWD failed, will detirmine if it's in your budget. If your mechanically inclined (I'm not so I would not be able to fix it)you can take the system apart and often a good cleaning and some new seals are all that is required. As for maintence- well you can get the owners manual (Polaris may even supply it free if you contact them) and follow the recommended service intervals. As for replacement parts- Well Google is going to be your best friend here. Lots of good supply houses online. Also try to find a good local dealer as they can be very valuable when it come to hard to find parts. You got a good machine! Worth the time and effort (and money) to fix it up!

The first thing to do with the AWD is change the fluid in the hubs. Easy and only costs the price of a quart of ATF. Pull the front wheels off and take out the allen head plug. Look for debris on the magnet. Turn the hole down and drain them. Fill again and turn the hole to about 3 o'clock and let it drain out until it stops. Put the plug back in and try them.

They are picky about having clean fluid in them.
