Most people don't consider or understand the stress that a key puts on a shaft. If the gear was splined or properly bonded the result would have been even more reliable than a keyway.
I am however with the rest of the crew that this is an awful issue that was not handled well.

So to boil this all down, after a bunch of time digging through parts diagrams and on the phone with my dealer, here is the deal.

All Machines 2010-2013 (according to the parts manuals) were made with crank 2204233 which was made with a pressed on timing gear until 2014 when they tried to remedy the problem with 2205283.

They ran crank 2205283 for MY14-15-16 until they finally fixed the old 2204233 and put in it MY 2017.

If you look at the parts for MY14-16 you will see the 2205283 now super ceded by the "new" 2204233. Very deceptive. They should have come up with a new PN for the MY17 cranks to SHOW they had a new crank based on the old 2204233...but then everyone would have been demanding a new crank. (as well they should) So the easy cover-up was to "fix" the old 2204233 and no one is the wiser.

Even the old 2009 which used crank 2203926 (never used again after that model year) now shows super ceded with the "new" 2204233.

So the bottom line is that if you are driving around with the original 2204233 you are at a risk to have it spin. If you have a 2014-2016 with crank 2205283 you should be ok, and if you have a 2017 with the new 2204233 you should be ok.

Sorry to bring back a dead thread. Just picked up a 13 850 xp. It has almost 5000 miles on it and the engine has never been touched. Should I still be concerned about the timing gear? I figure if it made it this far it should be fine. Input please.

If you are that worried, pulled the rocker cover and look down at the crank. You should see 1 black mark in the crank and another mark on the gear,.. they should line up. I was lucky and caught mine before it went too far, my quad only has 800mi.

Do you have a low power, hard starting, or erratic idle issue?

No it runs smooth starts easy and loads of power. It does have the occasional high idle but that’s a different issue I’d guess. I’m just wondering if the gear is still at danger of slipping at this point in its life.

I would think it would be okay, but impossible to know. I think mine had 1,700 or 1,800 miles or so on it when mine slipped the first time. After the second time I was always nervous, and never fully trusted it again.

Does the top end have to come apart to split the cases? Or can I just pull the engine split the cases weld the gear and reassemble?

If you're asking that, I'd highly suggest you get some on-site help. Yes. Top end needs to come off to split the lower end case.
