The plug is a PITA to get to, but I've done it by loosening the front plastics and tank just enough to get a socket in there. Something I have noticed is they seem to be really sensitive to water splashed on them. As soon as you can, go through the bike, disconnect each plug and put dielectric grease in them...especially the spark plug boot.

I have a service manual for the bike if you want it. Just PM me your email address.

Great tip, i'll try that next time with the grease, thanks! I got it out today and rode around for about 30 minutes with no issues, it sounds better as well, so I'm hoping the plug and the fresh gas and cleaning the fuel valve took care of the business here...

I greatly appreciate the offer of the service manual, I just ordered one off of ebay and should have it in the next day or two. Hang on to it for the next guy in need!

Welp, I had some other issues that have since been corrected, rode all day yesterday and things were fine. Today the whole backfire and stall thing seems to have come back. Fresh gas, fluids, plug, everything I could think of. Any other ideas? It seems like the battery is dead and the only way to start it is with the pull start. Could a bad battery cause these issues? Do I need to clean and rejet the carb?

Thanks for the help....

I would think its a carb issue.
make sure there are no air leaks in the intake or exhaust especailly the header area.
Have you adjusted the throttle cable free play or tthe ETC?

There are no leaks that I can tell, I haven't done anything with the ETC or throttle cable free play.

What's so strange is that when this thing has a full charge on the battery, it runs great. Day one all is well... It's when I get to day two and have left it and not charged the battery or put it on the tender that it starts acting like this. Is this an indication of the ETC needing to be adjusted? I would think if it were the carb, it would act like that all the time...

true about the carb unless you have debree intermittently causing problems.

the battery could have some connection to issues with the ETC. I would replace the battery if it is giving you problems as you would need to eventually anyways and you cannot run these machines without a battery.

The thing is it's been almost like clockwork...

Battery charged... Day 1 rides awesome
Sits overnight... Day 2 rides fine for awhile, then backfires, dies, pull start, runs for a few minutes, backfires and dies again, the panel lights are dim like the battery is dying, weird.

Having to have the battery to run begs the question as to why we need a pull start then? Even my 1978 Honda CT90, will charge the battery once it's been running. The battery on these doesn't get charged as well while the motor is running?

Probably a dumb question, but I'm curious nonetheless, I will look into getting a new battery as well as checking on the ETC, thanks for your advice.

it should be charging the battery if everything is operating correctly and the battery can take a charge. If you run without a battery you will blow out all the lights on the machine.

It seems likes it takes the charge, but isn't apparently holding it for too long... I have a lithium battery for my WR450F and it's been great, how do the lithiums do for the Scramblers? Are they recommended? If so, any particular brands or just go with a standard battery?

I use the Deka AGM batteries, Miejers has the Diehard branded Deka for a decent price.

Your machine has a 250 watt alternator, you should do a Charging system test and Alternator Output Test but your battery probably has a bad cell or something.
