ATV Newbie with 17 Sportsmen XP 1000 touring (798 lbs)
I know this post should be posted under the maintenance forum but I thinking this thread knows whats under my ATV.
Can anybody recommend Lift /Stand for my ATV? Or should I be lifting up the front and back separately to do maintenance like I do vehicles. I see ATV Lift /Stands everywhere and they appear to make sense. I need access in order to perform the standard owners manual maintenance. Thanks
I picked up a Derek Weaver motorcycle lift table for less than $1000. If I remember right it was about $900 shipped to my door with the side extensions. Air operated at 100PSI capable of 1000lbs. It does take up room in the shop, but really saves my back.
Thanks for your replies going to have to do something. I saw the ones at Harbor freight and that's what sort-of started this discussion. I think it makes sense at least for me to invest in a lift/Stand that has a dual purpose especially if its hydraulic/air operated like a lifting a ATV and a snowmobile.
A few years ago,(BY accident:grin) I picked up a iDEAL 2200 lb Motorcycle ATV Electric Hydraulic Lift with UTV kit from discount ramps for under $2000.The main reason I got it was i hit RED Line Lifts up for a price match.Iv done business with them before so wanted to stick with them. But their reply was
If that's their price you should give them your money as quickly as possible and hope they don't change their mind. I'm at $2560 shipped with a UTV kit if you order on our website. I might can come off that a little, but no parts of $2100 minus another 15% for Fathers day. That' the deal of the century./QUOTE] With that said I bought it. It's a BIG nut but well worth it IMO .You do have to have the real estate in your shop, which I do.
After looking at the Ideal site, suggested by Duse, I'm thinking one power lift with attachments? A table lift for for some maintenance jobs and a center stand lift (undercarriage) for other jobs?
Revising this topic because I haven’t made a decision yet, and this spring, I’ll be force to make a decision (2017 1000 Touring). The ATV manual says dry weight is 800lbs. I couple of comments/questions. Yes I’m a ATV newbie, but not a maintenance newbie.
1. Are there points the ATV can be jacked up with a floor jack and stands? I don’t see anything in the owner/maintenance manuals.
2. Harbor Freight has two stands and I’m not pushing HF. ( I’m sure other MFR’s may have something similar/better quality?)
2a. 1500 lb. Capacity ATV/Motorcycle Lift (lots of questions with this lift)
Amazing deals on this 750Lb Heavy Duty Atv/Mower High Lift Jack at Harbor Freight. Quality tools & low prices.

3. What about table lifts? I’m not familiar with table lifts. I realize there more money but I might have dual use for the lift. Can you change the oil on a table lift? Can you place a piston type jack on a table lift to lift up a wheel? Edge of the ATV? Grease it?
I have a Craftsman version of the 1500 lb lift, 3 table lifts in different widths, lengths and other options (vices, drop out panels and removable wings to change widths - I also have 2 floor jacks, a bottle jack, a gantry chain hoist and 3 sets of jack stands (I have over $250K in tools).
With the table lifts; I change oil, use floor jacks, bottle jack, the 1500 lb lift and jack stands - the table lifts are very convenient, but I'm looking at installing a twin post above ground frame lift for working on the side x sides and my car and truck. I will need to rearrange my shop, add an overhead door and possibly connect my warehouse building to the shop building.
If i were considering the 750 lb lift, I would get two of them to be able to lift both ends of the vehicle at the same time.
Yes you can jack up an ATV with a floor jack and put jack stands under it. Just find the frame underneath it. Or another spot same as your car or truck. ATV lifts will pick up the machine, but block the places you need to get to for an oil change. The mower lift will only do one end at a time and then you are at the wrong angle to correctly do an oil change since the engine, trans or differential should be level. I have a table lift. I used to use snowmobile skates. Jack up the machine and put the tires on/in the skates and lock the brakes. Then I could move it around the shop to wherever I needed and work on it from a wheeled seat. But I still had to be bent over all the time. I picked up a table lift after using one at the dealership. Big difference on my back. If you have the room in your shop, it is the way to go. You can do all your maintenance on the table. Anything you can do on the floor, you can do on the lift. I bought the plate jack for mine, but used a regular scissor jack before that to jack it up and remove tires etc. I use jack stands to stabilize it when I have wheels off, just like on the floor. I do not regret the table lift purchase at all.....
Thanks for your reply's. I think what I'm going to do is get that Lawn Mower/ATV lift and learn about maintenance on a ATV (move away from the dealer). I also subscribed to the ATV maintenance forums herein.
However, If I do get that Polaris snowmobile, I'll have to get a new compressor and a table lift. I do regular maintenance to ski boats and jet ski's but never an ATV...just a little intimidating at first, I hope
If you can do boats and jet ski's, you can do ATVs. Same parts different places. Oh and the ATVs have wheels but you probably already figured that one out. Newer ones with all the computer controls have less that we can do in our own shops. But there is still plenty of stuff we can still do without having to take them to the dealership. Basic maintenance items can still be done at home. You don't really need a dealership until you get a trouble code.
ATV's are much easier to work on than boats and jet ski's - I will only work on snowmobile and jet ski motors if someone brings it to me out of the vehicle - I don't work on boat motors at all and I only work on lawn mowers, roto tillers, chain saws, snowblowers, cars, trucks, tractors, skid steers, back hoes, tractors and bull dozers that I own - I also have a mini-hoe and a dump truck, but that's another story. I am a machinist, carpenter, electrician, electronics technician, computer programmer, concrete finisher, but I can't lay brick and block and I'm too old to do concrete finishing.
I worked 25 years as a maintenance supervisor in a steel rollforming facility. The owner of the company complimented me when I retired. He told me he had never met anyone with my range of knowledge and that I would be missed. I don't miss them.
I played bass in an original rock band for 17 yrs.- I do miss that!
Anyway sab1when using that mower lift It looks like tires still have to be on. What if you want to lift without tires? Like for greasing bearings, brake service etc....
Wheelbase for the HF 750 lb ATV/Mower jack is 30" - 56" wide. According to the 2017 XP 1000 Polaris manual the wheelbase is 57". The definition of wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear axles of a vehicle.
Why are we concerned about wheelbase? A longer wheelbase would change the front/back (distance) height from the ground. Hit the undercarriage? Am I missing something? I was more concerned about the centerline distance between the front tires/rear tires, e.g. track, and if the track falls within the range of the HF 750lb lift. Theres a display model at my local HF. I think I ll do some measuring
I was at HF yesterday. The 750 lb ATV/Mower 30" - 56" range pertains to the width between the the front, or back, tires/wheels and NOT the width from the front wheel to the back wheel. I'll have to compare it with my ATV but others say it works for their ATV.
Anyways, the other jack (lift) seems to make more sense but its way two small even if you come in from the side and make an adapter. A table lift is really the long term answer especially if you have multiple powersports.
I have this lift and love it. Five years so far and always works. Right around $1200. I also have the table jack like in the black widow pic. Works great
