Angry engine knocking

Hi
I have a 2013 sportsman 400 HO,lent it out to a relative for weekend,he returned it to my place, next day when I went to use it started up and engine had a loud knock coming from the right front of engine,it was not like that before I loaned it out,I suspect he drove the shit out of it in 4x4 low because he also blew out my trailer tire,Nice guy,not impressed,Any ideas what it is or how this may have occured???engine oil was up and ok.
Thanks

That's why I don't loan my stuff and that's what we are here for, for you to vent before you address the problem.

Sorry for your loss and let us know what you find.

My first thought might have something to do with the cam chain or cam chain tensioner.

Hey @spion97, the knocking, is it consistent with RPM changes? is it only cold? or any time the motor's running? is it more of a deep throaty knock? or a loud tick? Is there any possibility it was sunk?

Oooppphhh!
Some relative you’ve got!
I’m with others, never lend and never borrow anything with a motor.
From posts I’ve seen on this forum you may not have to look much further than an opinion posted by latebird. The guy knows his shit!
Best of luck

@Berserker - where did you get your electrical degree? I got mine at United Electronics Institute in Louisville, KY and I worked at General Electric's High Current Lab in Bloomington, IL. I admit I never worked with 125 VDC for a living, but I have worked with 3 phase AC up to 1 million amps at 600 volts. GE secured several patents for programs that I participated in and I developed test programs that were adopted by GE as standard operating procedures. While at GE, I conducted tests for Underwriters Laboratories. I have experience with Variable Frequency Drives, Programmable Logic Controls, EPROM's and RFC's.

This is just a condensed portion of my resume which includes experience as a store manager for Montgomery Ward, mechanic in several motorcycle dealerships, a maintenance supervisor in a steel roll-forming factory, gas station operator, employee in a specialty food warehouse, heavy equipment operator, truck driver, farmer and motorcycle shop proprietor. In addition, I served 6 years in the Army as a never deployed Armored Reconnaissance specialist during the Viet Nam war era. I have training in explosives and a variety of weaponry. I can repel, sky dive and was (no longer am) a certified life guard. I have training as a welder and a machinist.

How about a brief of your's?

This, what does the sound do when you rev it? Higher pitch, faster with revs. 500 miles, on a 2013, not used all that often, change the oil, what's it look like? Bring dick head cousin over and have him help you fix it.

must modify
