The purple wire under the hood... I hooked up the purple wire on my 2000 trail boss to a reverse light as a positive wire and it works great, light comes on when shifted to reverse. Now on the 2002 Sportsman 700 the purple REV ACC wire, which I thought was a switched ground, has 5 volts + when in park with the key on. In reverse it seems to revert back to a ground and shows 12.25v. When I hook up the light and use the purple wire as a ground I have 7.46v in park and 12.25v in reverse which makes the light dim in park (and all other gears) and bright in reverse. WTF is this?
Try unplugging the switch at the shifter and jumping the reverse on the harness { C to E on the harness plug } with a piece of wire and see if your reverse light works , could be a defective switch ?
Everything works as it should except I have 7.46v across that purple wire with ignition on and 12.25v when its in reverse. The voltages are 9.27v and 14.46v when running. How the heck are you supposed to hook up reverse accessories ie a backup light to the purple wire when its setup like that? Does no one have a reverse light hooked up? Could you use a voltage specific relay?
Well, it seems it may just be the sensitivity of the LED mini bar I am using as a reverse light. My test light which is a regular incandescent type I assume will only light when in reverse... as expected.
Try putting a diode in the #54 wire going to the speedometer cluster , seperate the two wires at the rev acc junction , put the diode in seies with the wire going to the speedometer , a small two amp diode should be adequate .
Thanks... had thought about the diode and a relay. After figuring out it was just the light I bought a 2" square 55 watt halogen and it works perfectly.
