I was plowing snow and the 4x4 cut out - it will cut in periodically, but sometimes when the rear wheel are spinning already. I'm afraid of tearing up the transfer case so I parked it for now. Just wondering where to start?
Probable an electrical issue form snow packed in. Pull apart the connections for the AWD system and check them, put a little dielectric grease on them and try it again. Could also be fluid in the front diff or hubs depending on which version you have.
Great suggestion, thawed out all the snow and found the sensor wires to the front diff were broken - rerouted and re-attached, all is well again just in time for our next dumping of snow.
