So I bought a 2005 sportsman 600, used, and have been slowly working on getting it back to decent shape. It was in worse shape than I thought. The problem I'm currently having is the quad turns over but it won't actually start until the key switch is released from the cranking position. Seems like a 2 count of cranking and then letting the key snap back into the on position gets it to fire. Replaced the ignition switch and it does the same thing. The wiring has definitely been messed with in the past so I'm not sure what's been changed or added. Any ideas?

Yeah - you have electrical gremlins - would best to get it to a qualified and experienced mechanic to get it straightened out or get a newer quad that has not been cobbled by a previous owner.
