Hey everyone I'm a new member to this site. I've been using these forums for a while now and I've been trying to figure out why I can't get my outlaw to run nicely since I put a pipe and intake and jets in. I ordered the HMF borich slip on with a foam umi clamp on filter and HMF jet kit and took the lid off. My co-worker convinced me to buy it and he said he could do all the jet work and tune it nicely. Well ever since he did the jetting and supposed tuning it's ran like crap, low rpm runs great but when I get just above the half throttle it starts to sputter a bit and shoots flames and once in a while it will back fire. I'm gonna say it is running lean because the spark plug is white. I started with a 160 jet and ran like crap, then I went to a 167.5 jet and ran the same and today I put a 170 jet in and no change, I was adjusting the A/f screw today with the bike running and there was no change in rpm from fully closed to 3 turns open. I'm lost on what to do and I've got zero experience with carbs.

When my co-Worker was adjusting the clip on the needle he lost the small spring in the rubber boot and replaced it with a short pen spring and said it would be just fine I'm not sure if that is an issue but I thought I would menation it.

How it sits right now
170 main jet
37.5 pilot jet stock size I believe
3rd notch down on the needle
2 1/2 turns on the A/F screw
I'm within 100 feet of sea level.

Are you sure that the needle is now staying in place with the pin spring? IF it drops down or never even raises up, it will have bad effects.

I am not sure about the specific carb on that ATV, but generally --
The main jet really only controls fuel amounts from about 1/2 throttle to full throttle.
Air screw controls mix at idle to about 1/4 throttle.
pilot control fuel from about 1/8 to about 5/8 throttle.

This will be a trial and error exercise. Be patient. Be concious of which throttle position you are in when it has problems.

You also might do a test with the air box lid back on? If that helps, then keep on going larger on main jet or raise the clip.

Well I messed with the jetting, the A/F screw and the needle placement and go zero changes the bike runs like crap at just over 1/2 throttle. I just sent my quad to polaris so hopefully they can figure it out. Oh I also tried with the lid back on

That spring on the vacuum slide is tensioned to a specific rate. Get the proper spring and I bet your issues will go away. A weaker spring would be better than a stiffer spring. Weak = rich. Stiff = lean....bad
