1995 polaris xplorer 400 radiator upgrade

ok so here is what I've found. The 95 and early models use a U radiator ( both in and out on top). The newer model Xplorer has a traditional top and bottom in and out.
Will the newer style work and has anyone done this? Seems like the flow would be much better. Why did they change the design anyways ?

They changed the design to cheapen them up - the U-flow has a divided tank on top and is more costly to produce - many older designs are more efficient or more durable - newer designs are a compromise between adequate and cost. So while the older unit was heavier, more durable and more efficient, the newer design provides adequate performance at a lower material and production cost and a higher profit margin.
