I have a 1996 Sportsman that I just bought used. I brought it to a dealer to have it gone over, and they are telling me that I need a new shift assembly. The part (1341179) is between $350 and $160 (new and used). Has anyone had issues with this part, and has anyone ever rebuilt it on their own? I'd love to avoid buying the new part if possible.

Recommendations?

It is usually just the rod ends that go bad. I think I paid $22.99 each (at Sanders Sporting in OK) for them when I replaced them on my 01 500. The rod end gets too much play and it becomes difficult to get out of gear. Check those for excess play.

There is also 10-40 motor oil in tthe box on the shifter, can usually take it apart, clean it up and put new oil in and they are ok, if its been run dry or has water in it it may need replaced, hard to tell without looking, may find one on e-bay alot cheaper.
